Cairo airport to Downtown Cairo: 5 ways, fares and how long it takes

By Moss · Updated · 3 min read
The short answerTake a car. A private transfer booked before you land or an Uber/Careem ride gets you to Downtown in 30 to 60 minutes. The Cairo metro does not go to the airport, and the bus is cheap but slow. Whatever you choose, show the driver the Arabic address, because most wrong turns happen in the last few streets.

Updated 31 October 2026 for guests heading to 20 Adly Street. Fares change with the exchange rate and traffic: treat the numbers below as ranges and check the app before you ride.

The five options at a glance

Costs come from airport guides published in 2026 and are rough ranges, not official tariffs. The private transfer price is from Egypt Tours Info, checked 31 October 2026.

Uber and Careem

Both work in Cairo and are the easiest way to avoid bargaining. The price in the app can jump when the roads are busy, so check it twice before you confirm, and agree on the exact address with the driver in the chat.

Airport taxi

Official taxis wait outside arrivals. Agree the price before you get in, or buy the fixed-price voucher at the desk, because many cars do not use the meter. Do not accept an offer from someone who approaches you inside the terminal.

Private transfer booked in advance

The driver waits for you at arrivals and takes you to the door. Our team also runs the Cairo airport transfer service, and the Downtown drop-off is on its own page: private transfer from Cairo airport to a hotel in Downtown. The price starts at $25 for the car and the ride takes about an hour (Egypt Tours Info, checked 2026-10-31); drivers watch your flight status and adjust if it is delayed, and support answers 24/7. Car sizes and prices on that page (checked 2026-10-31): sedan for 1-2 guests with 2 bags $25, van for 3-5 guests with 5 bags $35, minibus for 6-10 guests with 10 bags $50, bus for 11-20 guests on request. The price includes taxes, a bottle of water and a private air-conditioned vehicle; tips are not included. The driver waits outside the arrivals hall with a name sign (drivers cannot enter the building); meet-and-assist inside the airport is available on request.

Bus, and why the metro is not an option

Cairo's metro stops at stations well away from the airport and a bus covers the rest, so with luggage it is slow and tiring. The public bus is the cheapest way to the city but takes at least 50 minutes and does not drop you at our door. If you are on a tight budget and travel light, ask on WhatsApp which stop to use and we will tell you how to walk the last part.

Arriving at night or before check-in

The metro closes around midnight, so after that you are choosing between a transfer, an Uber or a taxi. Our reception is open 24 hours, so a 3 AM arrival is fine. Check-in starts at 12:00; if you land earlier, reception can keep your luggage while you wait. You can also complete the online check-in before you fly and skip the paperwork at the desk.

The address to show your driver

Give the driver this line, in Arabic, and our WhatsApp number in case the street is hard to find:

Which one should you choose

  • First time in Cairo, or arriving at night: the pre-booked transfer. The price is fixed and someone is waiting.
  • You are comfortable with apps and have data: Uber or Careem.
  • Budget traveller with a day to spare and one bag: the bus, then a short ride.
  • Not for you: the metro with a big suitcase.

Once you land, the hostel is a 5-minute walk from Attaba metro station. See the location page for walking times to Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Museum, or browse the rooms and book direct to save 10%.
